Calvin Bennett | What's That Sound? with Stu Watts Episode #33
Description
Stu Watts chats with Calvin Bennett, a Western Australian-based producer, songwriter and musician whose credits list to date reads like that of someone at least 10 years his senior.
Having signed last year a worldwide distribution deal with Downtown Music Services/DashGo, Bennett’s successes to date include two Western Australian Music Song of the Year Awards (and another seven nominations) for both his solo work and indie-pop duo Farraday’s Cage who was awarded the Nannup Music Festival Emerging Artist Award, has enjoyed national airtime on radio Triple J and have supported the likes of San Cisco, Justice Crew and Killing Heidi.
Mellow and understated are two words that could also describe Bennett’s personality, basing his work on total transparency as he establishes himself as a go-to producer for any and all musical ideas, which you can hear on collaborations with modern lo-fi innovators like 9ick, 7ove and Soul Food Horns, as well as fellow local artists on the rise including Alannah Chapman, Elianie, Jewel Owusu and Jarrod Jeremiah.
Now running Studio 156 in Perth, WA, with producer Roc, next up for Bennett will be a slew of more productions, both expanding his solo catalogue as well as his reputation as a musical production nomad, working with a range of artists from L.A. to Europe as he draws closer to his goal of global writing residencies.
Topics discussed include:
- Building a portfolio alongside other growing artists
- Creating an environment that is conducive to a quick workflow
- Creating more music by not being too precious about any one piece
- ...and more
